artist statement:
Connections. It has always been about making connections: emotional, personal, physical, visual, etc. Everything we touch, see, taste, smell and hear leads to a relationship. A connection is what I want to build between the viewer and my jewelry.
My current work uses kinetics to engage viewers as well as the wearer. Objects are propelled by body movement or actions. Movements can also be made by the viewers and this leads to the viewer being within another’s personal space. The developed relationship can lead to awkward moments or pleasant ones between the players. Texture and surface manipulation of the metal leads to connections influenced by the outside environment. Rusty metallic and dilapidated structures are translated onto the metal surface. This process can lead to an ambiguous surface or material content, which is purposeful to lead to visual intrigue. The material value is not as important as the overall feeling created.
